| Expression of six selective genes in peripheral blood cells was evaluated as diagnostic biomarkers for enzootic bovine leukosis (EBL) by using 10 EBL and 15 clinically healthy cattle. The clinically healthy cattle generally showed lower gene expression levels. Although wide variations of gene expression were found in some clinical cases of EBL, 4 and 5 among 10 EBL cattle showed higher expression of interleukin 2 receptor gene (IL2R) and Wilms’ tumor gene (WT1), respectively. Expression of IL2R in peripheral blood cells in EBL cattle was statistically increased; however, the lower sensitivity and higher variation in the gene expressions among clinical cases of EBL would be problems as diagnostic biomarkers. |

| An 11-year-old Holstein-Friesian cow exhibited anorexia and jaundice. A large mass was found in the liver during necropsy. Macroscopically, the mass was composed of dark red multilobular tissue and a centrally located abscess, which was connected to the hepatic duct. Histologically, the mass consisted of proliferation of small neoplastic cells and was demarcated from the hepatic parenchyma by a thick region of granulation tissue. The neoplastic cells were predominantly arranged in solid sheets, but they also formed blood-filled cancellous structures, and proliferating foci were seen around blood vessels. | Infectious bursal disease (IBD) is characterized by immunosuppression due to the depletion of lymphocytes in the atrophied bursa of Fabricius (BF). We have sometimes encountered contradictory findings: chickens infected with the vaccine IBD virus (IBDV) strain have sometimes exhibited a highly atrophied BF, but not immunosuppression. In this study, chickens administered vaccine or wild-type strains of IBDV were later vaccinated with the B1 strain of the Newcastle disease virus (NDV). | 10歳の雄の雑種犬が，3週間前から持続する発熱及び元気消失を主訴に帯広畜産大学動物医療センターを受診した．心雑音及び心エコー検査において僧帽弁の疣贅物が確認され，抗生物質等により加療したが，第7病日より心不全の悪化を認め，第10病日に肺水腫により斃死した．病理解剖では，軽度の心拡大及び僧帽弁における多中心性疣贅物が認められた．血液培養検査では，Staphylococcus haemolyticusが検出されたが，疣贅物を用いたPCR検査ではStreptococcus canisと100％一致する塩基配列が得られた．血液培養分離菌はコンタミネーションであった可能性が高く，本症例の心内膜炎はStreptococcus canisによるものと考えられた．血液培養結果と実際の心内膜炎起因菌が異なる場合があることを考慮する必要がある． |

| Degeneration of the optic pathway has been reported in various animal species including cattle. We experienced a case of bilateral optic tract degeneration characterized by severe gliosis in a Japanese black cattle without any obvious visual defects. To evaluate the significance, pathological nature and pathogenesis of the lesions, we examined the optic pathway in 60 cattle (41 Japanese black, 13 Holstein and 6 crossbreed) with or without ocular abnormalities. None of these animals had optic canal stenosis. | A 10-day-old, Japanese Black, female calf had shown astasia since just after birth. Focal symmetrical periventricular malacic lesions of the cerebrum and suppurative arthritis of the left hip joint were observed in macroscopic examination. Histologically, the cerebral lesions were confirmed as periventricular leukomalacia (PVL). The location and histological features of the lesions were similar to PVL in humans, caused by neonatal ischemia/hypovolemia. This is the first report of PVL in a neonatal calf. |

| Five rabbits suffering from diarrhea were diagnosed with proliferative enteropathy (PE). Histopathology revealed a thickened mucosa consisting of hyperplastic intestinal epithelium and infiltration of inflammatory cells mainly consisted of macrophages. In the affected epithelial cytoplasm, numerous curved bacillus-like organisms were observed in the Warthin-Starry silver stain and electron microscopy observation. In polymerase chain reactions, Lawsonia intracellularis-specific DNA fragment were amplified from affected ileal tissue extracted DNA in each case and present 5 cases were confirmed to be L. intracellularis infection. | 臨床的に牛白血病を疑ったものの，牛白血病ではないと確定診断されたホルスタイン種乳牛11症例の臨床所見を回顧的に整理した．11症例は体表リンパ節腫大あるいは体腔内の腫瘤触知により牛白血病との鑑別診断が必要であったが，病理解剖により乳房炎，子宮蓄膿症，膿瘍，肺炎，腸炎またはアミロイド症と診断された．牛白血病ウイルス（Bovine leukemia virus: BLV）抗体陽性を呈した4頭のうち，リンパ球増多症を呈したものが2頭であった．またこれら2頭のうち1頭はリンパ節細胞診でも大型リンパ球優勢であった．しかし，血清チミジンキナーゼ（Tymidine kinase: TK），総乳酸脱水素酵素（Lactate dehydrogenase: LDH），LDHアイソザイム2および3の活性値は4頭とも基準値以内であり，牛白血病発症は否定的であった．BLV抗体陰性牛7頭のうち，リンパ節細胞診を実施した2頭は小型リンパ球優勢であり，また，リンパ球増多症を呈した症例はいなかった．1症例では血清TK活性値が基準値をわずかに超えており，また，他の2頭は総LDH，LDHアイソザイム2および3の活性値がいずれも基準値を超えていたが，他の検査項目は牛白血病について否定的であった．腫大リンパ節の細胞診，リンパ球数算定，血清TK，総LDH，LDHアイソザイム2および3の活性値測定といった牛白血病診断のための検査を複数実施することで，牛白血病を否定するための診断精度を高めることが可能と考えられた． |

| This study evaluated the clinical usefulness of serum thymidine kinase (TK) activity for diagnosing bovine leukosis cases for which clinical diagnosis was difficult (‘BL with difficult diagnosis’). Median TK activity values in 24 ‘BL with difficult diagnosis’ and 36 cattle for which BL was clinically confirmed by cytology findings of enlarged superficial lymph nodes (‘clinically confirmed BL’) were 36.8 and 39.4 U/l, respectively (no significant difference). The percentage with positive TK activity (>5.4 U/l) was also similar in both groups (83.3% for ‘BL with difficult diagnosis’ and 97.2% for ‘clinically confirmed BL’). | 3歳6カ月齢のホルスタイン種乳牛が、分娩2カ月後に食欲不振を主訴に受診した。第6病日には肺音粗励 と心音混濁が確認され、心内膜炎を疑った。第13病日の血液生化学検査では慢性炎症像が確認され、また心音 心電図解析の結果、Ⅰ音分裂と延長、および二峰性P波がみられた。さらに心臓超音波検査では、僧帽弁の疣 贅物と僧帽弁逆流、左心室と左心房の拡張が認められた。第16病日に実施された病理解剖では、僧帽弁に3× 2×2cm 大、三尖弁に3×1×1cm大の疣贅物がそれぞれ確認されたほか、腎梗塞および左肩と左膝の関節 炎がみられた。細菌学的検索では疣贅物、肺、腎臓、関節からは細菌が分離されず、心内膜炎とその他病変と の関係性を解明することができなかった。 |

| 3カ月齢のホルスタイン種雌子牛が後躯麻痺、起立不能、努力性呼吸を呈した。デキサメサゾン投与により一時的に自力起立が可能になったが、後躯蹌踉は改善しなかった。神経学的検査により後肢の反射亢進が認められ、第3胸椎（T3）～第3腰椎（L3）の脊髄病変を疑った。X線検査およびCT検査によりT5‐T6の椎体変形および椎体膿瘍形成が認められたので、生前診断に至った。病理解剖により、この胸椎腫瘤は椎間円盤と椎体を侵襲し、脊椎管内に突出して脊髄を圧迫していた。また肺にも膿瘍形成が認められたが、細菌検査では細菌が分離されなかったため、椎体膿瘍、肺膿瘍の関連性は不明であった。 |
